Like Hank and Rudine, I was in Steve’s H.S. graduation class, as well as the Boy Scouts with Hank. I just found out the sad news a few days ago through Roberta’s email. As a friend (although we were not close) and a Pain Physician, I immediately think of the time after diagnosis but before death-did he have pain? I sincerely hope that he did not suffer from this vicious disease.
I remember Steve as a gentle guy with an unusual sensitivity to other people’s feelings. Last I saw him was at our graduating class’s 50th anniversary party in Chicago, apparently shortly before the diagnosis. It had been so long since I had seen him that I didn’t recognize him till he told me who he was. We discussed his father’s participation in our scout troop’s camping trips long ago. He thanked me for that feedback about his dad.
The world is now a lesser place. Good bye, Steve.

I had Steve in many of my classes at Bowen High School and remember him as one of the absolute nicest gentleman I have ever known. My sincerest sympathies go to his family.

I thank God for our paths crossing–although ever so brief in time. Thank you Steve. God bless your soul.

I have so many memories of Steve and I in our professional and personal trainings. He was warm, huggable and a wonderful man to call friend. He will be dearly missed. My heart will cherish his memory.

Like Joyce, I also grew up with Steve. As kids, we’d get into trouble occasionally (he and I climbed the large tree on the corner of Euclid with a garden hose and sprayed all the vehicles that came by) but mostly we played softball in the field at the end of his street and did all the things you’d expect of kids. I think we were both influenced by the fact that our parents all experienced WWII. We heard that we had opportunities unavailable to our parents, and while we recognized our parents’ emotion in making those observations, we didn’t understand the implications of either the reasons they felt that way or what it meant to realize the benefits those opportunities provided. Our loss.
Steve and I were in Scouts together, too, but I believe his interests lay elsewhere and, after graduation from Bowen High School, we saw each other infrequently. And that is my loss.

I’ll never forget all you taught me, and our sports metaphors.

I was referred to Steve for his skills as a therapist. I connected with Steve through our mutual experience with the Mens Warrior Weekend and ability to cut through the BS. He helped me, like I am sure he helped so many others, see my issues more clearly and gain a sense of control. This time with Steve allowed me to find grounding in my life and move forward. He was a special person with a great talent for making people feel heard. I am grateful he shared it with me.

My sister, Linda, and I have known Steve and Howard from the time we were all born and living in Hyde Park since our parents were the best of friends. Howard and I see each other periodically here in California and I’ve seen Steve as well both in Chicago and here. I have such wonderful memories of our childhood together. I’m saddened by his passing. Judy Heim Powell

Steve and his brother Howard were the exact ages of my brother Steve and I as we grew up in Hyde Park, the second generation children of german jewish parents. I always kid my mother that her children became “successful” because she always urged/compared us to the Wallman boys and children of her other german jewish circle. The Wallman boys were nice, conscientious, intelligent kids and were worthy to emulate. Sorry we have lost Steve. Rick Schwab

So sorry for your loss. I go way back with Steve, to kindergarten at Kozminski and then to elementary school at Warren as well as high school. I remember him when he was so shy he could hardly talk to girls. He obviously grew out of that to successfully establish himself in a profession where he was able to interact with and help others. We were never close friends, but I always enjoyed seeing him at our class reunions.
